August Music Calendar

Saturday August 2nd
The Additives 10:00
Economically recorded in the spare room of an
apartment, the five-song EP from the recently completed Chicago alt-country quartet
focuses on bouncy beats and foghorn-bass vocals creating characters from simple
situations, throwing in the occasional accordion (performed by a classically trained
pianist) for good measure. Remarkably kinetic, the songs beg to be listened to
all the way through; there is scarcely a wasted measure on the short but satisfying
disc. Mastered by Studio Chicago and with professional packaging, the disc comes
off as artistically lo-fi. Check out theadditives.com for a listen, as well as
a video for the opening track of the album. — Ryan Cunningham, Recoil Magazine

Jake
LaBotz
“Heartache transforms into profound albeit bleak wisdom on this acoustic
outing by bluesman/actor La Botz. From the abyss, he delivers stunners like “Depression
Brings Me Flowers,” “Hard to Love What You Kill” and “About
Who I Am,” which rank among the hardest-hitting, most poetic and melodic
songs he’s written...”

Saturday August 16th
The Long Gone Lonesome Boys
The first thing you notice about the Long Gone
Lonesome Boys: tight, cutting vocals, spot-on harmonies and arrangements. The
second thing: excellent songwriting. The third thing: It’s eerie how much
these ‘brothers from different mothers’ sound alike.
The LONG GONE LONESOME BOYS are John Milne, a California native, and Patrick Penney, a Georgia boy. They sound like brothers when they sing their beautiful alt-country songs together. If you like drinkin' songs, cheatin' songs, and great harmony singing you'll love these guys. Backing them up on mandolin/steel guitar are Chicago native Pat Keiner who also chimes in with wonderful tenor harmonies, Chicagoan Leslie Walle-Santos on drums, and Wisconsinite Jesse Woelfel on upright and electric bass. |

Saturday August 23rd
The Hoyle Brothers 10pm
The Hoyle Brothers approach their music the way
a preacher might prepare for a sermon: Reference the good Book, find a theme that
resonates and deliver it with fire and passion. That's what makes The Hoyle Brothers
so special. Their brand of genuine country music draws from the genre's deepest
traditions--lyrics that speak universal truths, melody lines that melt your heart
and two-step rhythms that make your boots scoot. The Hoyle Brothers didn't set
out to reshape the country music landscape. |

Saturday August 30th
CC & W 10pm
“A lively DUO that proves that artistically ‘less is more’, a contemporary weaving of punk, rock, and cowboy rhythm and blues. They stage a performance that entertains as well satisfies one’s musical hunger.
